Concerning the Maginot Line
Most of you probably know about the Maginot Line in France.
Now after its time in WWI, France decided it needed to man up and he created a large fortifaction that stretched all the way from Switzerland to Luxomberg.
There were a few purposes to the Line, such examples being to deter German fire, to allow for reinforcements to be sent, and to encourage the Germans to pass by France to invade places like Belgium instead...way to be a good neighbor there Francis.
And guys, this thing was packed with artillery and weapons. And you know what? IT ACTUALLY DID DETER THE GERMAN FORCES FROM A DIRECT ATTACK!
But unfortunatly, another part of the French plan worked as well. The part where the Line would encourage German forces to invade Belgium. Which they did.
So what do you think Germany did, seeing as they didn't want to attack directly? Easy. THEY WENT AROUND THE LINE. Because they had invaded Belgium, German forces were able to break the line in Belgium and the Luftwaffle SIMPLY FLEW OVER THE LINE. Other operations where also carried out at different points in the line, allowing Germany to bypass it.
Starting the attack on May 10th, they were able to continue deeper and deeper into France. An armistace was signed on June 22 and all other soldiers that were still there on the rest of the line were forced to surrender and taken to POW camps even though they still wanted to hold out. It should also be mentioned that they were successful in holding out against the Italians on the Alpine Line.
It was a good thought Francis.
